Google Panda 20 Update affects 2.4% of English Search Queries

Google released the 20th Google Panda Update on the 27th of September 2012. The latest update from Google, christened Panda 20, will impact 2.4% of English search queries. Only 0.5% of non-English queries will be impacted by the update.

So why am I blogging about it today? Because I just learnt today that the series of algorithm changes is named after Navneet Panda, a software engineer of indian origin. Apparently, he did the initial ground work for Google to help it improve the quality of its search results.

I thought I knew everything there is to know about Panda Updates, but apparently not! You learn something new every day!

So, what is Google Panda? For the uninformed, this is a change to Google’s search results ranking algorithm. It was first released in Feb 2011. The change in algorithm is aimed at lowering the Page Rank (PR) of thin websites and low-quality websites and improving the PR of high-quality websites. With the new update, content farms that are notorious have been removed from the Google index altogether. Google Panda also targets sites with duplicate content and those that have adopted other Black Hat SEO tactics.

With Google Panda 20 Update being released almost the same time with Exact Match Domain (EMD) update, it is difficult to determine what is hurting you if you discover the lowering of your ranking in SERPs (search engine results page). Google probably had a good reason to let the two overlap, but this has left a number of Webmasters confused.
