If you are not familiar with remarketing or retargeting, here is the definition:
“For marketers, retargeting is a way of following their “leads” around the web by showing them the exact same or similar offers. When someone comes to browse your website, the website leaves some cookies on his device. For retargeting purposes, a code is generated and placed on the page visited by the prospect. Retargeting ads are triggered by this code to target the visitor wherever he goes on the web. These ads are usually displayed on the sidebars and top banners of the sites you visit.”

Retargeting is quite popular marketing practice for social media sites. Facebook is already doing it and Pinterest has started it in June this year. Last year, it had experimented with retargeting based on engagement, so advertisers were allowed to retarget Pinterest users, who either clicked on – or saved pins. Pinterest is now becoming a more advertiser-friendly platform, where the advertisers will have far more options of retargeting.
One of the principles of marketing involves making a strategy based on user action on your website and this is exactly what Pinterest is implementing now. Pinterest allows you to create audiences based on the actions taken by them on your website and also on the pins.
Creating an audience based on engagement
Here is a list of five actions that the users can take on your pins and you can design a retargeting campaign based on that.
- Clicks
- Saved Items
- Comments
- Likes
- Close-ups
Apart from that, engagement audience can also be created based on the users’ interest in a certain pin that links to your site. So, it helps you to target users who have already shown interest in your pins and are likely to convert if communication is established with them.
According to basic psychographic principles, the people who have already taken an action on your pins are many times more likely to take action on the same pins in future. So, such kind of retargeting has an amazing potential in terms of new business development.
